The Alliance works together to create a sustainable future for healthcare laundry and linen

The Environmental Stewardship Program

The Alliance members are industry leaders in environmental sustainability. As members of the The Laundry Environmental Stewardship Program (LaundryESP®) they are committed to increasing efficiencies and creating more sustainable business practices.

Volume and Activity

The Alliance is by far the largest provider of linen and laundry programs for hospitals

The Healthcare Linen Alliance is by far the largest provider of linen and laundry programs for hospitals in North America.  Alliance members process over 1.1 billion pounds of healthcare laundry – that’s a massive 83,500 semitruck loads of laundry every year. Lined up front to back, those tractor-trailer units will create a line 1,423 miles long. That’s the distance from New York City to Oklahoma City.

The Healthcare Linen Alliance supports linen and laundry programs for more than 215,000 in-patient beds at 1,375 hospitals, plus 5,400 non-acute, long-term care and outpatient facilities across North America.

Recycling Water

The Healthcare Linen Alliance saves more than 2,000,000,000 gallons of fresh water each year through investments in various reuse and recovery technologies.

Proprietary water filtration and reuse systems along with the introduction of UV and Ozone technology lead up to an 60% reduction in the demand for freshwater.

Water recycling systems reduce the amount of wastewater effluent that goes back into our waterways and our environment, while improving overall water quality, linen quality, and sanitation.

Recapturing Heat

The heat recapture technology has three main advantages it reduces the amount of energy being used, it is cost effective, and it decreases degradation of the boiler.

High speed pumps are used to propel hot water through the heat exchanger, quickly warming the incoming fresh water, preparing it for the wash process.

Heat reclaimer systems and heat exchangers efficiently recycle the warmth coming from the discharged water — saving gas and electricity costs.

This system improves the efficiencies of the boilers and other wash equipment.

The Alliance members regularly invest in sustainable wash technologies in order to continue decreasing their carbon footprint.

Reducing Emissions

The Alliance members have worked together to achieve significant reductions per pound of textiles laundered by using heat recapture technology, providing local laundering options, and recycling water.

By choosing an Alliance member you are choosing a local laundry service, reducing the distance travelled. This cuts back the amount of diesel fuel emissions produced from long distance highway transportations.

Reduction in total energy consumption:
27%
Reduction in CO2 emissions:
24%
